Chief Development Officer

Reports to Chief Executive Officer

The Position

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a member of the United Way of Peel Region’s senior management team and is responsible for the strategic vision and leadership of all functions pertaining to Resource Development: annual campaign; major individual giving; planned giving; the endowment fund and special gift initiatives.  The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in enhancing UWPR’s ability to positively impact the communities it serves by increasing the funds raised on an annual basis.   She or he will build on past success while challenging and inspiring the organization to meet its higher aspirations.

The Chief Development Officer will work closely with the Director of Community Investment, whose department will collaborate on product and program development and donor stewardship, as well as support for donor engagement initiatives.  The CDO will also work closely with the Director of Communications and Marketing on the development of strategies and products to support donor acquisition, engagement, stewardship, and retention. In addition, the  Chief Development Officer will collaborate with the Director of Finance and Administration to ensure that the organization is in compliance with Board polices, legislated, statutory , the  Code of Ethics and UWPR stewardship requirements pertaining to resource development and the United Way’s donor database supports our customer relationship management objectives.

The Campaign Cabinet and the Major Individual Giving Campaign Cabinet are the volunteer driving force behind the annual campaign and major giving program respectively.   The Chief Development Officer is the Campaign Chair and Major Giving Chairs’ primary resource within United Way.  Business and community leaders engage colleagues and peers and their organizations to support United Way.  The two Cabinets and workplace campaigns ultimately involves thousands of volunteers and reaches into workplaces large and small across the region. 

Key Responsibilities

As a member of the UWPR leadership team, the Chief Development Officer will:

Be passionate about the United Way cause

Provide leadership and strategic direction to staff in all areas of resource development including the annual campaign, individual giving, donor relationship management and volunteer development

Provide strong and effective leadership to the staff team so that they contribute fully to the realization of the strategic and operational goals and objectives.  To maintain high visibility and accessibility among the members of the team that fosters engaged two way communications with staff members

Personally identify, cultivate, solicit and steward potential major gift donors, positioning UWPR in the minds of donors as the recipient organization of choice

Implement an effective, highly productive and rewarding work environment for the department that reflects operational needs and prescribes the authority and responsibility of staff as they relate to the accomplishment of specific objectives and priorities

Participate in the development and implementation of overall organizational policies and strategic planning

Formulate and recommend to the CEO, an annually reviewed three year Resource Development Plan based on UWPR long term organizational and community investment requirements

Support the CEO and colleagues in providing information, counsel and support to the Board of Directors, Cabinets, and its committees in order to enable them to effectively fulfill their governance and fundraising responsibilities

Ensure the integrity of the Campaign results, and preparing and distributing accurate, relevant and timely reports to Board, Cabinet, the CEO, volunteers, and staff

Facilitate the integration and alignment of the resource development program into the rest of the organization to optimize outcomes and impact

Provide staff direction and support to the Campaign Cabinet and Major Individual Giving Cabinet as well as department operations including UnitedWay@ work, donor relationship management, materials development, training and development

Positions UWPR in the minds of donors as the recipient organization of choice in terms of greatest impact, by reinforcing existing and building new relationships

Ensure the recruitment, training, management and stewardship of volunteers so as to meet United Way’s resource development goals and expectations and foster a motivating work environment for all of them

As a member of the senior management team, responsibilities include:

Developing an annual budget and work plan to achieve the Department’s objectives and then assess progress, recommend and implement appropriate changes so as to meet strategic organizational objectives

Providing leadership, coaching and mentoring to departmental staff, reviewing performances annually to establish standards, goals and objectives and ensuring appropriate professional development opportunities for staff

Assisting in the development and implementation of overall organizational policies through participation in the Leadership Team

Representing the United Way of Peel Region at conference, functions and speaking engagements, presenting a professional image

Developing partnerships with other United Ways, not for profit organizations, agency leaders and other organizations

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be/possess:

A passion for the mission-desire to work in a values-based organization and serve the needs of the Peel Region community

Proven experience in a senior leadership role in not for profit Resource Development and/or Sales including a track record of effectively leading, motivating, developing and managing a diverse and high performance professional team

Excellent senior level analytical thinking, strategic planning, thought leadership and an influencer - a big picture thinker and planner

Strong business development and entrepreneurship skills

Proven ability to build relationships and work effectively with a broad constituency including donors, business, labour and government leaders, social service agencies, other foundations, youth, established and emerging ethno-cultural communities

A successful track record in growing Resource Development revenues, donor base and donor engagement

Expertise in donor relationship management, corporate giving trends, and the philanthropic environment

Ability to oversee a broad portfolio, be both internally and externally focused, with strong management skills and service orientation

A compelling communicator with highly effective written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking

Proven ability to work effectively in a fast paced volunteer-driven environment and relate well to volunteers and staff at all levels

Results focused, assumes personal responsibility for achieving outcomes

Persuasive, passionate, diplomatic with high energy and a sense of humour

Relevant post secondary education
